The Swim Lessons You Remember—Reimagined for Today
Remember the excitement of moving from Minnow to Shark?
The pride of earning a new badge?
The confidence that came with every splash?
The YMCA of Greater Kansas City is bringing back the classic fish-named swim lesson levels, giving today’s kids the same fun, motivating experience generations of YMCA swimmers grew up with—while delivering the trusted safety and skill-building parents expect.
A Classic YMCA Tradition Returns
For decades, YMCA swim lessons helped children build confidence in the water through a clear, fun progression—earning fish sticker along the way. We’re proud to reintroduce this beloved system, because learning to swim should feel like an adventure.
Our fish levels help children:
Same heart. Same mission. Just like you remember it.
How the Fish Levels Work
Children progress through a series of fish-named swim levels, each building on the last. As they master new skills, they earn a badge and move up—boosting confidence, motivation, and a lifelong love of swimming.
Each level focuses on:
- Water safety fundamentals
- Age-appropriate swim skills
- Confidence and independence in the pool
From their first splash to strong, capable strokes, every child moves at their own pace with encouragement every step of the way.
